Eid al-Fitr is an important celebration in Islamic culture. People in Bandung celebrating the Eid al-Fitr on two days this year, 27th April and 30th April. For your convenience, here are the timetables to plan your fasting and celebrating at the same time.

To mark the end of fasting, here are the best dishes to celebrate Eid. Some are traditional local treats but other can be made with any ingredients you like at home. Let’s start with rendang, a type of stew known throughout Southeast Asia.

  • 2 kg beef, cubed
  • 2-3 bunches young turmeric
  • 1 lemongrass
  • 5 cloves garlic
  • 3/4-inch cubes galangal
  • 200 ml coconut milk
  • 2 cups cooking oil
  • 100g Kaffir lime leaves
  • 2-3 bay leaves
  • 100g fresh chilies, sliced
  • Salt to taste

Instructions:

  1. Blend the turmeric, ginger, garlic, galangal, kafir lime leaves, bay leaves and chilies. Use a food processor or blender.
  2. Heat oil in a large pan on medium heat. Add the blended ingredients and fry until fragrant.
  3. Add the beef and season with salt. Cook for a few minutes until the beef is cooked through.
  4. Pour the coconut milk into the pan and cover the pan. Cook on low heat until the beef is tender.
  5. Once the beef is cooked and tender, uncover the pan and continue cooking uncovered to reduce the sauce. Stir occasionally until the sauce is thick and coats the beef.
  6. Serve warm with steamed white rice.
